A new coffee shop opened at Main Street on Thursday morning.
Located at the Welcome Center BA NIBLOCK MCSD, Bobcat Cafe provides the opportunity to learn practice, as it is run by MarshallTown High School students (MHS).
Family teacher and customer science MHS Jules McGrew said students not only greet customers, take their orders and drink, but they get their hands on the entrepreneurial side of things.
“They make appointments for firefighters and distributors and health inspector,” she said. “Really really interesting to get that venture skill in a real -life environment.”
Every day, there are three shifts from three to six working students. Listening to the students talking, McGrew said they are having fun and already saying they want to work in Bobcat cafe next year.
“I think the best lesson is when we are having fun,” she said. “I’m hope they get skills but look back and say it was so fun to do and they started a café run by students. I think they proud of that.”
McGrew stressed that coffee only accepts credit or debit cards. Customers can choose from a variety of drinks such as Espressos Americano, Latte, Chai Latte, Frapuccino, Cappuccino, Mochaccino, Tell and Thot Hotch. However, for the first few days, people will be confined to the drop of spots, cold creation, hot chocolate and icy latches. Mcgrew said they are waiting at a pump for the Espresso machine.
“It had to give up yesterday, but the weather,” she said. “Hopefully the pump will come today and will go out and go until next week. We have a small car in the school they have practiced. They know how to do the drinks.”
With the limited car, Mcgrew recommends that people try a French press coffee.
Customers can also get some foods to accompany their drinks. MHS kitchen students spend time in the afternoon of baking goods such as cookies, donuts and muffins. Inside the cafe, students also prepare the morning waffles and burritos – or bacon or sausage.
Mcgrew definitely suggests that hungry customers try Burrito.
“Students developed a sweet Aioli Thai Chili that is there,” she said. “It’s not spicy, but it is enough [for people to ask] ‘Wow. What is that sauce? ‘”
Mcgrew also recommends bobby bits, which are small pieces of waffles with a vanilla glaze and cinnamon and sugar.
While people will not get anything that they would not be able to find in other coffee shops, they will give something unique to students.
“They can learn the skills of communication, hospitality and aspect of safe food service kitchen,” she said. “Really really what they can give us than what we can give to them. [Although] Having students make mature goods single out and simply have that newer perspective of what is in tendency, what is new fragrances and food that young people would like. Then be directed by an instructor who says ‘this is what a middle -aged person may want or what the market may want,’ separates us. “
Lessons and experiences in communication, hospitality and aspects of customer service are what McGrew hopes that most students will learn and understand.
“Making eye contact and involvement in the conversation are some soft skills that, when we go around and ask businesses what they need from the younger generation, many are saying soft skills,” she said. “This is something we want to focus here.”
